Here is a student project carried out in a group of four people who started with the the theme:
How could a city encourage its citizens to adopt more pro-environmental behaviors?
There were two phases during this project, the first one being the user research which started with a photo report. Then there was a questionnaire for which we collected 103 answers about the cleanliness of the cities and the most annoying types of garbage. This allowed us to understand that the most abandoned garbage in the nature is cigarette butts.
Questionnaire part. 1
Once we knew where to focus our analysis, we did a benchmark on existing trash cans and ashtrays. Then we continued with a shadowing, trying to observe the behavior of people. In order to finalize our data collecting, we conducted interviews with twelve people about their relationship with cigarettes and their management of cigarette butts.

It is after all of these steps that we were able to create our personae and the experience maps related to them.
Questionnaire part. 2
3 Personae and experience map
This is our three personae and our anti-personae.

For the second phase of work which concerns the conception, we discovered the existence of the association GreenMinded. This association is specialized in the recycling of cigarette butts and offers different tools like a recycling kit or public ashtrays. We imagined to join this association for this project.
Card sorting
We conducted a card sorting workshop to think about the ideal user journey, the solutions to provide and the organization of the application that would accompany our users.

User path 1
While my teammates were in charge of designing the application and the storyboard of the user journey, I personally handled the object design.

We finally chose to answer the initial question by focusing on the perception of cigarette butts and their impact on the planet. We offered solutions with a management of this waste adapted to the behavior of consumers who can find the cigarette butt containers via the application, know their statistics and get gifts from their recycling.
